Project of the Year Award
For ABQ Uptown
Albuquerque - September 14, 2006 - ABQ Uptown, a community and lifestyle destination set to officially open in November in central Albuquerque, was named Project of the Year by the New Mexico Chapter of Certified Commercial Investment Members.
The award, presented for best execution of design, concept, value, and utility in building and development, was given to El Paso-based Hunt Building Corporation, owners of ABQ Uptown.
The ABQ Uptown development project was selected as part of CCIM’s 2006 “Virtual Tour”, which annually showcases New Mexico commercial projects over 10,000 square feet. The competition is judged by a committee made up of real estate brokers, developers, and architects, all members of CCIM. This year’s judges based the award “On the criteria that the project enabled all members of the
local commercial real estate community to participate and benefit from the project, as well as the fact that the project is substantially
completed this year,” said Steve Karmen, Assistant VP of Commercial Real Estate Group and head of the 2006 Awards Committee.
“Our winner rose far above the average property and surpassed them in several measurements in regard to originality, economic impact, project complexity, overcoming challenges, and aesthetic quality,” said Karmen. He added that Hunt beat out 83 other Albuquerque-area commercial real estate projects entered. Karmen also noted that this year’s competitive review included industrial, retail, and office properties totaling 2.8 million square feet and representing $400 million in construction. “This award really epitomizes a project that sets the standard for excellence in real estate development,” he said.
Gary Sapp, executive vice president of Hunt Building Corporation, said the company believes ABQ Uptown will be an important addition to the city. “We have felt all along in this process that ABQ Uptown will make a statement about the progressiveness of the City, as well as make a strong contribution to Albuquerque’s economy,” said Sapp. “This award is a much appreciated honor, and we share it with our Albuquerque partners – those who helped us develop, build, and market this project.”
ABQ Uptown will become Albuquerque’s first “live-work-play hub”, complete with upscale retail space, residential units, restaurants, entertainment venues, and a hotel. The already-completed retail space is the first phase of this mixed-use development.
Retail stores that have signed leases within ABQ Uptown include brand-names such as Pottery Barn, Talbot’s, Williams-Sonoma,
Coldwater Creek, Jos. A. Bank, Eddie Bauer, Borders Bookstore, and the Sharper Image.
According to Josh Hunt, Project Developer for Hunt Building Corporation, the next phase of the project is scheduled to commence this fall and will consist of construction of 190 urban loft apartments. Phase Three of the project will potentially include a hotel, for-sale condominium units, office space, and additional retail space.
El Paso-based Hunt has been involved in New Mexico development and construction for over 35 years. The firm has an office in Albuquerque and has completed over 30 major projects in the state. Recently, the company completed construction on a $164 million military housing privatization project at Kirtland Air Force Base, the largest public-private venture undertaken in New Mexico. Hunt also built, managed, and subsequently sold the 400,000 square-foot Plaza at Cottonwood, a retail development in northwest Albuquerque.
Founded in 1947, Hunt Building Corporation and its affiliates provide a full range of development, design, construction, investment, and asset/property management services. The companies have been headquartered in El Paso and operated by the Hunt family for four generations. Other Hunt affiliated companies are HBC Land; HBC Property Managers; Hunt Building Company; Hunt ELP; Hunt Communities; and Hunt NR.
