Two locally owned businesses, La Bella Spa & Salon and Marcello's Chophouse, were among retailers announced Thursday as coming to ABQ Uptown.

La Bella, which offers therapeutic and beauty services, is based on the West Side and is opening a second spa. Marcello's will debut as a steak house with a casual atmosphere managed by veteran Albuquerque restaurateur Frank Marcello.

An 80-foot lighted tower was unveiled Thursday by El Paso-based Hunt Building Corp., which is developing ABQ Uptown as a "lifestyle center" with a mix of uses. The tower bears a blue neon letter "Q," for Albuquerque, at the top.

Gov. Bill Richardson was on hand as Woody Hunt, chairman and CEO of Hunt Building Corp., and Gary Sapp, lead developer on the project, reviewed its progress.

The first phase of ABQ Uptown has 220,000 square feet of retail space in a series of buildings at Indian School and Louisiana NE. The official opening is set for November.

The first phase is about 85 percent leased, with most of the national retailers opening their only New Mexico store at ABQ Uptown, said John Sedberry of Sedberry & Associates.

The project's second phase involves 196 upscale apartments to the east of the retail center. Construction is expected to begin by the end of the year.

Other retailers announced Thursday include:

BCBG, a women's fashion store;

Bravo! Cucina Italiana, a white-tablecloth casual Italian eatery; and

White House/Black Market, a bridal boutique and women's fashion store.

Other previously identified retailers include Williams Sonoma, which sells cookware; Pottery Barn, which sells home furnishings; Borders Books and Music; Jos. A. Banks, a men's clothier; and women's clothing retailers Coldwater Creek, J. Jill, Chico's and Talbots.

Other retailers will include The Sharper Image, which sells electronics; Cingular Wireless; California-based Elephant Bar Restaurant; Jared, The Galleria of Jewelry; Eddie Bauer, which sells men's and women's casual clothing; and World of Knives.
